Sewing with recycled multifilament PES thread, in automotive products
The aim was to carry out sewing work on ERT’s products, using a sewing thread developed in accordance with the company’s specifications. In addition, a multi-layered fabric incorporating the project’s synthetic leather was used to assess its impact on the quality of the sewing.
What was achieved and what that learned
It was possible to develop a thread with mechanical properties similar to those used in ERT. The thread performed well when used on both manual and automatic sewing machines, and is suitable for a variety of sewing techniques.

ERT carried out sewing tests, mainly of functional and decorative types, using its manual and automatic machines. To this end, it selected some of the engineering designs for its products and carried out the sewing as described therein (door panel, armrest, handle and center console (the first two are shown in the images)). The multilayer textile under consideration was the one produced by the company (from fossil-based materials).
The thread used was developed through a partnership with CTB and CIT, taking into account the technical specifications provided by ERT. CTB developed the recycled PES multifilaments and CIT twisted them.
Future visions
The production of this thread can be a way of recycling PES waste, transforming it into a ready-to-use product. This is also of interest to ERT, as it makes its products more sustainable and in line with trends in the textile market.
