Rolf Ekroth x LSJH: Creative garment remaking workshop (Turku, Finland)
The aim of this workshop was to engage and inspire people in garment remaking as a circular clothing practice to extend the life of used textiles.
How has the activity been organized:
LSJH, with the support of VTT organised a garment remaking workshop in Turku for the local people to engage and inspire in garment remaking. Finnish fashion designer Rolf Ekroth, known for his creative use of post-consumer garments from LSJH in his Spring/Summer 2026 collection, collaborated with LSJH and facilitated the session. The designer shared his previous collections and demonstrated how he used old clothing in his designs, providing inspiration and ideas for garment remaking. Following his presentation, Ekroth and his assistants supported participants in bringing their ideas for remaking garments to life. In the workshop, participants remade garments using post-consumer clothing and materials provided by the municipal waste management company LSJH, or they brought their own. In addition, through the workshop, VTT studied citizen engagement and garment remaking, with the expected study finalisation in 2026.
What was achieved and what that learned
Participants created new garments and gained skills and inspiration for DIY reuse of textiles.
Participants in the workshop crafted beautiful garments from post-consumer clothing with co-creative support from the designer and technical assistants. The participants gained inspiration, new ideas, and skills to apply in future DIY projects, promoting the extension of garment use rather than their disposal. The event also demonstrated the role of social gatherings in encouraging sustainable consumption and textile circularity. The atmosphere was warm, with participants sharing tips, discussing sustainable clothing practices, and exchanging ideas. Notably, as a concrete outcome example, some participants who had never used a sewing machine or remade garments before successfully did so for the first time, acquiring new skills during the workshop.
Future visions
Participants gave positive feedback and requested more workshops, but no continuation is currently planned.
