Thermo-mechanical recycling of white polyester post-industrial polyester waste
RISE has received materials from Centexbel and VTT in the form of compacted textile and pellets, and then spun them as mono-components, to explore the possibility to collect filaments. The pressure in the spin pack increased throughout the trial, with a black residue in the filter, indicating some form of degraded contamination. The material received from Centexbel was spun at a lower temperature of 270 °C, while material from VTT was spun at a temperature of 290 °C.
This process has been realized to recycle PES into new spinnable filaments. It can process pellets obtained via chemical recycling via glycolysis, as well as the PES by-product from the dissolution of cellulosics in blends (where chemical recycling also needed).
