Closed-loop recycling of polyester via glycolysis
The aim of this demo, all led by RISE, was to recycle polyester waste of high purity or extracted from dissolution of cellulosic fractions in blends. The process starts with the depolymerisation of pure (95-100%) polyester textile waste through glycolysis, which is then followed by transesterification of the monomer BHET to the monomer DMT. The monomer is ultimately purified through sublimation and re-polymerized to new PET. The polyester yarn from filaments can be weaved to fabric containing 50% recycled polyester (in weft).
Besides achieving open-loop recycling of equivalent quality as virgin polyester, the process also allows to remove contaminants and colour.
