Fiber to fiber recycling of polyethylene terephthalate (PET)
The final goal was the production of two garments made of two different knitted fabrics made of chemically recycled PET (cPET) filaments.
First, PET textile was cut into clippings, compacted and fed into a reactor filled with got ethylene glycol and catalyst. After one hour, the reaction slurry was filtered to remove unreacted PET. Water was added and the whole mixture cooled down to promote crystallization of the reaction product; PET monomer Bis(2-Hydroxyethyl) terephthalate (BHET). The precipitated crystals were washed and dried and then repolymerized back into PET.
Then, RISE (SE) carried out the spinning and texturizing using a pilot-scale melt spinning line.
Finally, the texturized filament cPET yarn was mixed with non textured cPET yarn and put in a jacquard knitting machine and a double layer fabric was knitted with the tExtended logo vaguely visible in the fabric. Another fabric was also produced as a piquet binding. The fabrics were then manufactured into a dress and a sporty jacket, were also the tExtended logo was embroidered on the chest.
